AIST Open House & Adachi Fireworks Festival

Today is an "open house" day for AIST and many other research institutions in Tsukuba. Mostly targeted at elementary and junior high school kids, there are many exhibitions to display what is being worked on at AIST and introduce the world of research and science to the kids.

As I live inside AIST, there's no reason not to take a look. Unfortunately, everything is in Japanese. While some of the presenters could speak a little bit of English, the English explanations are often very simplified. Nevertheless, here are some photos of the event.

What might be of interest to many of you is that there are several high school projects on display as well. Most Thai students are required to do a project in school, but time and other resources are often very limited. Here, science projects are a club activity. The analysis of Planaria reproduction below has been in progress for 20 months.

In the evening, I went to the Adachi fireworks festival (花火大会) near Kitasenju station. Basically it's a one-hour long fireworks display. The first part was simply firework while the second part is fireworks with music. There were some interesting designs such as a heart or a smiling face. Unluckily, I was on the wrong side of the river so I couldn't see the fireworks well. I did however, hear the people there use these exclamations — すごい (great; amazing), きれい (beautiful) and 見えない (can't see!)

People have already started gathering when I got there

The whole riverside was soon filled with people

It's starting!

"すごい!"
One more thing, it seems that more people gathered than the mobile network could handle. First, my internet was really slow and before I knew it... this came up. It seemed that the network decided that it couldn't handle more users and blocked me.
